You may have noticed a beautiful new shade structure on our Kindergarten playground this school year! The structure, known as a Pergola, provides our Kindergarteners with some much-needed shade during recess, small group times, and outdoor chapel services. If you’re wondering how the shade structure arrived on our campus, you’re in for a real special story!
The Pergola on the Kindergarten Playground was actually an Eagle Scout project coordinated by Zachary Colby, a Friends Christian School alumni! (Class of 2019). With the inspiration of his two older brothers who also chose to give back to the school in previous years, Zachary knew he wanted to do the same! “I went to school here and I wanted to give back in a way that would benefit the school. I have so many great memories of my time here, I made so many friends and I learned so much,” shared Zachary.
He contacted the Elementary School Principal, Becki Crandall, to see if the school was open to the idea. What were the needs of the campus? How could Zachary and his team of volunteers help bless the incoming students and more in the future? Mrs. Crandall was very up to the idea and shared the needs of the school including shade needed on the Kindergarten playground. So, with an idea, a goal to attain, and the approval of the school, Zachary took to social media for help with funding!
“My relationship with God is much stronger due to the time I spent at FCS, and I’ve made so many friends. I’ve learned plenty of life skills too, such as teamwork, how to use my creativity, and being able to interact with others,” shared Zachary.
“It’s not surprising to see Zachary’s commitment to FCS, even after graduating. Zach exemplifies the Boy Scouts of America Scout Oath and the promise to do his duty to God and his country and to help other people. Zachary is an outstanding young man and we’re proud to count him among our FCS alumni,” sharedTodd Perkins, Head of School.
“He is a taller version of the young man I know in 4th grade. I am proud of him working so hard to reach this important goal!” added Becki Crandall, Elementary School Principal.
Our Kindergarteners are enjoying their time spent outdoors under the Pergola! Thank you to Zachary and his team of volunteers for blessing our students and our school for many years to come! We are so thankful for our Alumni and their heart to serve. At Friends Christian School, nothing blesses us more than seeing our former students use their gifts and talents as a blessing to others. To be on the receiving end of that blessing it very special to us!
We love to see and hear what our Friends Christian School alumni are up to after their time at Friends Christian School. When we see our alumni on campus or in the office, it’s always a fun time reminiscing and celebrating their achievements after FCS.
